A Test

Michelle is in the bathroom. An empty carton sits next to her and she's reading the instructions for the fifth time, not that she needs them but just to keep her mind off the agonizing wait. Three minutes. Not very long at all, with Tony sometimes three minutes feels like five seconds but she knows from experience the way time can feel dragged out - has felt 5, 10, 15, 30 seconds as an eternity.

She waited until Tony was away to do this test, if it was good news she wanted to surprise him and if it was not...she wanted a few moments alone to deal with the disappointment.

Finally, enough time has passed. This version is simple, it will tell her the answer in english, no pink lines in the test window to decipher. Although she'd almost rather that, because at least then she could have some false hope.

If you told her a year ago that she'd be standing in a bar at the end of the universe holding a pregnancy test and re-married to Tony she probably would have demanded you get some psychological evaluation. But now she's hoping for that Pregnant answer.

She lifts the test up and reads the results.

Not Pregnant.

She nods to herself and takes a deep breath.

I expected this, it's not a surprise, we haven't even really started trying yet...

But part of her is worried because she knows she hasn't been on the pill in weeks and the amount of sex they'd been having...

She throws the test into the garbage, washes her hands, and goes out to sit on the bed and wait for Tony to come back. She isn't sure if he wants more bad news, but it would be wrong not to tell him.
