He tilts his head. "Everything okay?"

She rubs her forehead a little, "Do you remember when Maria was dating Charlie and we were talking and she asked me for some advice?"

"Ah, yeah."

He closes the door behind him, trying not to look too...distressed.

"I think I accidentally gave Chris some advice."

Tony stops.

Tony stares.

Tony heads over to the table with the champagne.

"You're gonna need this."

She nods, "Can you open it?"

"Yeah."

Which he does.

She walks over to get a glass of champagne.

He hands her the glass.

And sips at his own.

"You know...Maria and Charlie...weren't...really meant for each other."

She takes a large sip of her drink and drapes her towel over a chair. "I know, but I probably...shouldn't have said that."

"Listen, Michelle... I don't claim to know what's going on in Jack and Chris's heads. I can only make decisions based on what I see, and I don't see any kind of future coming out of this. Whatever you said, it was the right thing to say."

"That's basically what I told her," she takes another sip, half the glass already gone. "And I told her that I think if things are going to end, it's better if they end before anyone gets hurt."

I wish somebody would have told that to me and Kim.

"Yeah. That's...not a bad idea, actually. I know her father's gotta be pissed about it. She doesn't have to do everything he says but that's...I dunno." He sips again.

She nods, "I know he's not happy at all about it. I can't really blame him but at the same time...it's been a while since Jack actually seemed happy."

"Right."

But it's also been a while since Jack was in a healthy relationship. Was it acceptable to enter into an unhealthy, unproductive relationship simply because of the happiness it produced?

Tony's inclined to say no.

"Well, Jack has no trouble finding himself a woman. He'll probably meet up with some girl in the bar...this place is good at matchmaking, you know."

She gives him a look. "I know he really cares about Chris and as impossible as it sounds - I think she likes him."

"Yeah, but...I liked Kim, too. And she cared about me."

She tenses a little, "It's not the same."

"How?"

[chelleuncurled]

She drinks the rest of the glass and puts it down before answering.

"Because you couldn't forget me and I...couldn't forget you."

He stares at her silently.





"The concept...is the same. Not the context." He sighs. "I don't want you to beat yourself up over this, all right?"

She touches his arm, "It's not really the same concept."

"Two people in a bad relationship, who stay together because they like and care about each other? Sounds the same to me."

"But it's not really a bad relationship -- it's just not one with much of a future."

He sighs. "Which is another problem."

He wasn't suggesting that Chris start a seach for her future husband, no, but he liked the concept of believing, no matter how falsely, that a relationship had a future. Knowing that it didn't was frustrating.
